Hi SOUL Hi! Lovianhal!
How you? I’m glad you’re here. I’m here too! I love you.
Toni Morrison has been haunting my brain space lately…
I had the opportunity to rewatch Toni Morrison’s The Pieces I Am Documentary. I had seen it before, maybe a few years ago, but watching it again this week really put things in perspective for me about my recent meditations on death and life and purpose and worthiness. The doc is powerful in that we, the audience, get to be in communion with Star Auntie Toni, the spirit, in a contextualized way.
We get to explore her motivations and reasons and intentions for writing the things she wrote. I was particularly compelled by the way she described her work when someone asked how she had the energy to do the 50-11 things they perceived her to be doing at once. A mother of two boys, an editor at Random House, A Teacher at Princeton or Howard or Yale, and a prolific Author of pulitzer and nobel prize winning books that were notorious and radical in the way they focused in on Black people in relationship with their own lives and each other in a way that did not even perceive “the white gaze”. Toni said in the gentle and oft cavalierly calm way she is known to say things out loud: “I’m doing one thing. I teach books, I edit books and I write books.”
What strikes me so much now about Toni Morrison–looking back on a life well lived– is her utter sovereignty. Her immaculate confidence. Her deep and profound relationship with her own worthiness. Even as an elder who grew up in a similar version of the world we live in now. A world where so many have cracked under the pressures of white supremacist delusion-even now. As a Black woman, who identifies as Black in a world where Blackness in and of itself often feels as though it’s under attack,
where does that sovereignty come from? Where did her innate understanding of her innate worthiness come from?
I mean. The way Auntie Toni gathered all the many Euro interviewers who asked her the most caucastic questions throughout the course of her career…the way she gathered them
with her gentle voice
and her poetic cadence
without needing to lift her tone in the slightest
without needing to bother about the insult
her ability to turn the words spoken to her around for them
to be seen
and heard
and understood
from its source.
so the caucacity could be a mirror.
She gathered them.
Like an Auntie.
Grown women and men
who could have known better if they wanted to
but they weren’t told before
that they needed to
so they didn’t.
They didn’t even know to be embarrassed.
They couldn’t see the way they were transformed
in public
become babies at her knee.
Not scolded, but lovingly corrected.
Returned to themselves.
Their ignorance and arrogance
placed on their own laps.
Heavy
like bricks.
To be carried for eternity
until they would pick them up
until they were willing to see themselves.
Until and until and until…
they could gather the pieces of themselves
the tatters and shards the world told them was wholeness
and finally see where they had it fucked up at.
Believing their inhumane beliefs were humanity.
And humanity itself was something they could give or take.
That lies were a negotiation point.
That time is on their side.
She gathered them.
The way she gathered us.
Gave us back what we thought was lost.
It’s been some time since Auntie Toni went on to Glory. It’s powerful for me that all these years later, as an ancestor, she feels so close. Like a favorite teacher of a class I’m excited to take. And it makes sense. Especially since this week we continue our month long conversation about worthiness. The Pieces I Am is on Netflix until June 30 btw.
