The StarsNotes

Hi SOUL Hi!  Lovianhal!
How you? I’m glad you’re here. I’m here too! I love you.

Lovecraft Country has been in my spirit the last few days. I want to say it started from a conversation we had on TEMS last week that included Sinners. We talked a bit about Annie’s divination process and we wondered aloud it Annie knew what her choices were through the bones she threw– and still chose to die to save Sammy and the music. We also talked about the Tulsa episode from Lovecraft Country where Leti retrieves the Book of Names before it was to burn during the Tulsa Massacre. I love how visual art lingers in the psyche months and years after I’ve seen it. And how new ideas about what I’ve seen opens up, as I do.

Saying that, I had determined that I was going to rewatch Lovecraft Country from the beginning– again– to see what resonates all these years later. And yet, My spirit was being so specific yesterday. My spirit kept wanting to see Episode 7, “I Am”. The one where Hippolyta had cracked the code of the multiverse machine all by her genius astronomer lone self and was sucked into a portal to an alternative Earth? and eventually ended up in the room with Beyond C’est–the gorgeous being with the ginormous afro. The one who when Hippolyta asked who she was was, responded, “I Am.” Gurl. Then when Hippolyta told Beyond C’est (I learned this was her name from the accompanied HBO podcast many moons ago btw) that she couldn’t keep her in the room, Beyond C’est, “You are not in prison.” Gurl.

Remember how Hippolyta was in that white futuristic room with the sensors on her wrists and because she didn’t understand what was going on, her trauma-informed response was to try to escape. How she pounded on the door until she bled. How she tried to remove the sensors and she bled. How in her brilliance, she figured out how to open the door and tried to run, but Beyond C’est rebuffed her. And told her again, “You are not in prison.” And then stood over her and said “Name Yourself.”

Watching this episode again, especially the part where Hippolyta discovers that all she has to do is to say what she wants to experience and she’s there–her consciousness took her wherever she wanted to go. At first she wanted to dance on stage with Josephine Baker. And she did. I’m not clear that it mattered whether or not she was good at it. What mattered was that she was there. And she was there until she was able to name another experience she wanted to have. Which transported her to Dahomey, as one of the Agoji. And she stays there until she’s trained and she gets to kill as many white soldiers as she needs to get her rage of all the fuckery she experienced out. And then she finds her way back to being George’s wife. And she lays with him and then tells him about her adventure so far. And it’s all so romantic until she realizes and can finally articulate to him how he was complicit keeping her small, just so she could fit in his life. And he listened. He understood. He acknowledged his role. And then they traveled together through the omniverse. And then, she was back in front of Beyond C’est, who at this point looked like a Goddess in a silky brown gown that floated like thick, shimmering ribbons with clusters of stars as the backdrop.

The Goddess told Hippolyta she could be integrated into their society if she wished. And Hippolyta acknowledged her vastness. She wondered if she could go back to being a regular ole human on the regular ole Earth that treated Black people like trash. She reckoned for a blink that her daughter needed her. Her reckoning was happening at the same time that she danced, dissolved and reconstituted her physical form into and out of stardust. Gurl.

She said. In essence, I am so Big now. How could I go back to being so small? I’ve seen some things. I know what’s possible. Why would I willingly go back to a place that does not see me? A place where I have to shrink to stay alive. Why would I do that?

I think, the reason this episode has been tinkering around in my awareness the way it has is because that is where we are now in society and within ourselves. We as a collective have seen some things. We know what’s possible. We are our ancestors answered prayer. We came from a place that is limitless and were asked to shrink fit ourselves into these tiny bodies and walk lockstep in survival mode with so many people who have struggled with their own humanity for generations here– on “reg ole Earth”.

But what if– just as Annie chooses in Sinners the path that leads to collective liberation
and
-Hippolyta returns in all her reclaimed vastness to “reg ole Earth” to anchor her activated consciousness to the collective cause of liberation (in this case freeing her daughter from a curse and whyt folk from being diabolical and being able to use magic too.)

What if– I actually don’t an ending to the question I was wanting to ask here. I thought about for awhile– and maybe What If? Is the whole question. And also the answer. In the same way that “I Am” is. I dunno.

Anyway, we do have much to talk through tonight on TEMS as we continue our month-long discussion about BEing HEIR— Happily Elevated, Illuminated, Regal.

When I was a kid, I thought I was big enough to have every right to name something out of this world, and then I just started shrinking myself. By the time I met you, I’d already gotten so small. And I thought you knew how big I wanted to be.
