You ever see 3000 Years of Longing? Starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton? It\u2019s a story about how a Jinn\u2014a mystical ancient being with unimaginable magical powers was relegated to being a \u201cgenie in a bottle\u201d with a \u201cmaster\u201d to grant wishes for. ie\u2014someone without any power who gets the being with all the power what to do. I\u2019ve been thinking about this a lot lately. How the unimaginable power and beauty of Blk people was captured and confined. Curated even, for unseasoned gazes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Sway?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is always the question. Never why. We know why. The why is everywhere we look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How you get a Jinn\u2014probably the most powerful being on the planet–in a bottle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Time Was Had\u2026<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind, I\u2019m pretty clear I am actively working on my memoirs and a documentary or docuseries about my life as a twenty year Philadelphian radio broadcaster. If you follow me on socials, maybe you\u2019ve seen my ongoing \u201cA Time Was Had\u201d instagram docu-series (in consciousness)<\/a>\u2014 which are essentially a bunch of gorgeous phone dumps. Moments in time that I experienced fully and captured my unique vantage point with my camera phone that, maybe, I intended to post, but never did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moments from my travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art that took my breath away in museums and galleries around the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photos from my radio career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adventures I\u2019ve had at concerts\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chile, looking back on all of the memories I now have the opportunity to curate and add music soundtrack too, like a collage or a living quilt of my life has been boundlessly beautiful. And cathartic for this part of my journey where I\u2019m discovering who I am now with my teen in her second year of college, divorce final and a life to re-imagine in real time. Looking back into these fabulous moments has sparked something in me I struggle sometimes to express in words. It\u2019s like I\u2019m seeing myself and my talent with fresh eyes. It\u2019s like, a part of me that was always there, that I couldn\u2019t see in its fullness is now blinking at me with both eyes like, Sis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, part of the reason these photos and videos have been in phone purgatory for over a decade is that I used to want to jump head first into new things like my life was on fire. I might have had the mind to capture things for the Harriet Tubman\u2019s interwebs in general or \u201cthe gram\u201d specifically prior to setting out on a particular adventure, but then the moment is over. A time was had. And I move on to the next thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think what has changed is how many people\u2014 close people\u2014 in my life have passed on to the ancestor realm. I do not think of my mortality in any meaningful way, but I have started to think about what I want to leave behind when my time comes. I don\u2019t so much care what will people say about me (I\u2019m a Sag, draw your own conclusions) as much as, what if my life were a museum and I can curate the art and artifacts in it any way I want. What\u2019s going in?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m pretty clear this sentiment came from a conversation we had on TEMS (The Envy McKee Show) earlier this month where Kitakiya, who\u2019ll be on the show tonight \u2014asked the Deans in the room \u201cwhat if your life is already a masterpiece?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What if? That question again<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So. Anyway. At the same time as I have been on this rediscovery journey about what my gifts, talents and capacities are now and what I think my \u201cThird Act\u201d is going to look like in coming months and years;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve also been thinking about all the things that are going on in the world. And how my art and my personal vision for myself is designed to contribute to a kind and just society that works for everyone. Does it? Will it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then\u2026 it literally dropped in my mind out of nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How<\/p>\n\n\n\n

a<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being<\/p>\n\n\n\n

more<\/p>\n\n\n\n

powerful<\/p>\n\n\n\n

than<\/p>\n\n\n\n

any<\/p>\n\n\n\n

other<\/p>\n\n\n\n

in<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

universe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

gets trapped in a bottle<\/p>\n\n\n\n

with a master to grant wishes to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the movie it was magic and manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our world, it was and continues to be violence and marketing\u2026 and after 3000 years of longing, WE forgot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
