Hi SOUL Hi! Lovianhal!
How you? I’m glad you’re here. I’m here too! I love you.
This year’s fasting journey has really and truly been one for the books. Bunmi, Kitakya and I are finally just beyond the halfway mark– I’ll also add here that this is the first year (that I’m aware of) that people have done my 40 day fast with me. As I’ve mentioned before, this is my tenth year doing this yearly preparing for Spring ritual and so far, 22 days in, has been like nothing I have ever experienced before.
I’ve performed two fire ceremonies– each cumulative and more powerful than I am currently at the comprehension level to fully understand… and each a necessary step toward “The Unknown New Self” as Eisha Mason described it last week.
At some point in last week’s conversation, you can nearly almost see my brain trying to explode in real time as I grappled with concepts I’ve heard and thought I understood before… and yet, in the moment felt like new information that I had to surrender to. Chile.
And there’s more. For the last 22 days, I have been extraordinarily intentional about sitting with myself. ALLLLLLLLL of myself. Particularly the parts of myself that have been aching in the wings of my attention and intentions to be seen, heard, acknowledged and addressed. If only so they had a pathway to be transmuted and transcended. What I’m learning about fire ceremonies is that they are not some magic silver bullet-like pill that one does if one is looking for a quick fix transformation. Fire ceremonies are an opening–a portal–a beginning of a journey. The petitions we burn are in essence a demonstration to the flames of things we are willing to see. The petitions become burnt offerings to the God/Goddess of ourselves, much in the way ancient practitioners used to sacrifice animals or people to Gods/Goddesses outside of themselves. And a shift becomes available. A pathway to transformation is opened up. And after the ceremony, we get to walk through the portal that opens before us into the new. A version of ourselves we’ve never met before, but was always possible.
It’s wild how much forward movement can happen in a matter of 22 days. It’s amazing how much capacity and power we are entrusted with as spiritual beings that is yet untapped, if only because we have become so distracted by things that have time and again proven to be woefully unimportant. Inconsequential. Pointless. And you know how I know? Because that which we have thought we could never live without- the structures, the systems, the ideologies, the isms, et all– are burning now. And the wild part is the spiritual fire can only be seen by those with a particular spiritual vantage point. There are physical demonstrations, sure…
The folk and the systems don’t know themselves enough to bear witness, to be present with their own burning. They can’t see, feel or know on a conscious level–yet–that the end is nigh. That they built the fire. That they lit the matches. That they are the petitions– the offerings to the flames…
AND.
Maybe they aren’t supposed to.
Maybe these times exist for those with the spiritual eyes to see. For those of us who are willing to do the hard work of facing ourselves. To reckon with ourselves. To love up on ourselves. To acknowledge the part of ourselves that has never been imprisoned to this fuckery opera of a world. Has never been stuck. Has never been enslaved by ideology or circumstance. The part of us who knows who we have always been and who we’ve always been meant to be. The part of us that can witness the burning happening in the world as an omniversal fire ceremony. Our petitions–the structures, the systems, the ideologies, the isms, et all.
And as the flames flicker and jump, we sing Burn Baby, Burn! we dance around the bonfire that has already been anointed with the offering of leagues of our generational blood, sweat and tears.
The portal to the unknown new self opens up.
And we walk through.

They, the midwives of what was being birthed.
They, the welcoming committee of the new Earth,
writhed in riddim,
glorious heads covered in white fabric.
Glorious hips shaking the mountains loose.
Glorious eyes seeing the truth.
The only truth.
Casting out the evil as they looked it in the face. Casting out the demons that took over the souls that chose disconnection.
Each hip thrust, pushed the old toward the edge of the great mountain of life.
The demons gnashed their teeth and swung their talons, but the women
were not moved.
They could not be.
Freedom was their song renewed.
